Police Called After One Direction Fans Rush Doors of Movie Preview

by Sierra Marquina Sat., Aug. 3, 2013 5:25 PM PDT

One Direction, 1D, This Is Us Trailer OneDirectionVEVO/YouTube

One Direction held an advance screening of their upcoming 3D movie This Is Us and, not surprisingly, it caused quite the fan frenzy.

So much so, the Los Angeles Police Department was needed. The fandemonium went down at the Grove's Pacific Theatres on Saturday morning.

NEWS: Band member Louis Tomlinson becomes a professional footballer

According to The Los Angeles Times, fans obtained passes to the screening via gofobo.com and started lining up outside the theater as early as 3:45 a.m., but when there were still empty seats come show time, fans started rushing the theater doors attempting to enter the auditorium.

One mother said, "They charged and went straight past the ticket takers for the doors of the actual theater screaming, ‘Let us in! Let us in!' It took about a half an hour before a police car came with two policemen in it. They started palming kids down and shoving them outside."

NEWS: One Direction's "Best Song Ever" music video features Zayn Malik as a hot woman

A source tells E! News: "It was invite-only with a first-come first serve basis. People that weren't able to get in were stuck outside the theater. Someone shouted that the band was actually there and that's when a bunch of screaming girls ran in and tried to get inside."

But, the source added, "security was able to stop anyone from entering. It was a non-incident. The screening carried on as planned."

One Direction: This Is Us lands in theaters August 30, but hopefully with a little less chaos.

Daniel Radcliffe Is Really Funny: "He's a Stand-Up Comic"

Daniel Radcliffe AKM-GSI

Daniel Radcliffe is kinda perfect.

Not only is he cute, but he can also act, sing and dance.

Plus he's super nice—and super funny!

Just ask Juno Temple, one of his costars in Horns, an indie about a young man (Radcliffe) who wakes up one day with horns growing out of his head.

VIDEO: Daniel talks about the final Potter flick

Michael Cera, Juno Temple, Magic Magic Andrés Gachón

"There was one take where there was quite a complicated shot and we had to keep redoing it to get the shot right," the British actress told me the other day while promoting the DVD release Magic Magic on Aug. 6. "We had to open with me laughing and Daniel must have told me 20 to 25 jokes. It was insane.

"I didn't know somebody had that many jokes," she said. "It was genius. He's a stand-up comic."

Also very funny, the t-shirt Temple received as a gift from her favorite vintage store to celebrate her role as late porn star Linda Lovelace's best friend in the soon-to-be-released bio-flick Lovelace.

NEWS: Get the scoop on Daniel's steamy gay sex scene in Kill Your Darlings

Juno Temple Jerod Harris/Getty Images

"It's bright and yellow and it says in blue writing, 'I made Linda Lovelace gag,'" Temple said. "It's pretty cool. I have it on my wall at home."

In the creeptastic Magic Magic, Temple plays Alicia, a co-ed whose visit with her cousin in South America goes horribly wrong when they take a trip to a remote island. "I thought for a minute there was going to be a mass killing," she said of reading the script for thriller. "I thought Alicia was going to become this crazy serial killer and maybe eat the corpses. But it ended up being so much more nuanced than that."

Next up, Temple could be playing Queen Elizabeth II's sister, Princess Margaret, in Girls Night Out, about the teenage royal siblings sneaking out of Buckingham Place to celebrate V-E Day on May 8, 1945.

Temple, however, did not follow the birth of Prince George. "I'm happy for them, but I'm not really good at following tabloid stuff," she said. "Anyone having a baby is a magic moment in their lives so it's very exciting but no, I'm not a royal fanatic."

Five Reasons 2 Guns is Pretty Funny, Worth Your Time

2 Guns Universal Pictures

The summer movie season started with the first-ever female-driven buddy-cop flick The Heat starring Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy.

2 Guns is the 154,673rd male-driven one.

But wait, that's okay! Denzel Washington is in a good mood for once (see below). Mark Wahlberg has more fun winking at waitresses than shooting drug lords, but even more fun blowing the heads off chickens. (Again, see below!)

READ: A 2 Guns review roundup

Plotwise, Bobby Trench (Washington) and Marcus "Stig" Stigman (Wahlberg) are two undercover agents out to bring down a Mexican drug lord played by good ol' Edward James Olmos. The plan is to cripple the cartel by stealing $3 million by way of a bank robbery, but they actually find $43 million. Worse: Neither knows that the other is not a criminal. This high-octane late-summer release could have been yet another forgettable flick of summer 2013, but there are so many genuinely funny moments throughout we think it's worth a look. The film also stars Paula PattonBill Paxton and James Marsden. Here are five reasons 2 Guns is worth checking out:

2 Guns Universal Pictures

1. Denzel and Mark: A Dynamic Duo. Watch out Chickens! In one scene, Wahlberg shows a talent for shooting fowl. Like, an insane talent. The whole time the two try to shoot each other (and succeed), and there are also numerous stand-offs south of the border. You've seen this all before (well, not the chicken scene), but 2 Guns is the perfect example of why stars are are stars. Both of these actors have been way too serious lately. (Okay, Wahlberg was sorta funny in Pain & Gain.) On screen for together for the first time, the pair actually seem to be having fun, and are a pleasure to watch.

2 Guns Universal Pictures

2. Paula Patton Shows Off Her Guns. Deb (Patton) must balance her undercover love affair with Bobby while dating an unseen bureaucrat named Harvey. While her real life hubby Robin Thicke keeps us shaking with his new album Blurred Lines, Patton hops into bed with a shirtless Washington. Patton's lovely locks somewhat obscure the topless actress, but you'll see enough to be crazy jealous of the pop star.

2 Guns Universal Pictures

3. Paxton's SOB. Hot on the trail of all that money is Earl, played with cool menace by the former Big Love star. Mucho props to Paxton (and the smart script by Blake Masters) that after so many endlessly tense Russian-roulette movie scenes, Earl is the first person to make a compelling case for not shooting his victims in the head.

2 Guns Universal Studios

4. Feels like True Romance-era Tony Scott. Some of Washington's biggest hits in the 2000s were with the late director. 2 Guns helmer Baltasar Kormákur (Contraband) maintains Scott's grit with bullets aplenty, and the rat-a-tat banter is grin-inducing. The results are less deadly serious Man on Fire (2003), more stoner-Brad-Pitt-funny a la ‘93 Tarantino-scripted ‘Romance.

2 Guns Universal Pictures

5. Hooray! Happy Denzel! With his fake gold teeth, Rat Pack hats and that silly goatee, Bobby's a DEA agent who embraces his baller lifestyle as a drug runner. (Clearly, Bobby hasn't seen American Gangster, where Frank Lucas frowned upon such extravagances.) Audiences can relax, sit back, and enjoy a performance from the star who isn't about getting another award. That alone makes 2 Guns worth seeing.

Does the pairing of Washington and Wahlberg entice you? Can an end-of-summer release starring two A-listers really be considered a sleeper hit? Sound off in the comments!

Twins Days: Brangelina, Jennifer Lopez and More Stars With Adorable Double Trouble

They say two is better than one—does this apply to kids?

Raising one child is hard/fulfilling enough, but some celeb mommies popped two out at once! In honor of this weekend's Twins Days Festival, we wanted to spotlight the twins out there who just happen to have famous parents.

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's twins, Vivienne and Knox, may be the youngest of the bunch, but they're sure growing up quickly.

PHOTOS: Some stars are twins themselves!

The two were born just five years ago in the south of France, increasing the family size from four to six.

The twins even accompanied their father on his trip to Tokyo! The duo is no stranger to traveling: They also went to Berlin last month with their mom.

PHOTOS: They may not be twins, but thanks to their outfits, these celebs sure do look alike!

Another set of twins we love is the offspring of Marc Anthony and his ex-wife Jennifer Lopez.

Although the two split after seven years together, we're glad to see the parents are still on friendly terms for their 5-year-old kids, Emme and Max.

In fact, J.Lo loves her non-traditional family!

We do too, we're glad to see these families going strong.

Russia bans rockers over flag stunt

3 August 2013 Last updated at 17:13 GMT Video still of Jared Hasselhoff with Russian flag The incident took place in the Ukrainian city of Odessa US rock group Bloodhound Gang has been banned from a Russian music festival after a band member stuffed the Russian flag into his underpants on stage.

Culture Minister Vladimir Medinsky described the band as "idiots" and said they were "packing their suitcases".

Bass player Jared Hasselhoff was seen in a video posted on YouTube pushing the flag into the front of his pants and pulling them out of the back.

Hasselhoff later apologised for the stunt, local media reported.

The incident took place in a 31 July concert in the Ukrainian city of Odessa.

"Don't tell Putin," Hasselhoff said to applause as he grabbed a Russian flag from the wall behind and performed the stunt.

'Idiots'

The band had been expected to play at the Kubana festival, held in the first week in August in Russia's southern Krasnodar region, also known as Kuban.

But their performance billed for Friday was cancelled.

"I spoke to the Krasnodar region authorities. Bloodhound Gang is packing their suitcases," Mr Medinsky said on Twitter.

"These idiots will not perform in Kuban."

Festival organiser Ilya Ostrovsky told gazeta.ru: "We're here to make friends or listen to music. We will not allow anyone to insult the inhabitants of any country."

Local media reports later said that Hasselhoff had been questioned by police.

The head of Russia's Investigations Committee, Vladimir Markin, said his department was prepared to pursue criminal charges against "all those involved" if prosecutors decided there was a case.

The band is still in Russia but has left Anapa, the town where the festival is being held.

Bloodhound Gang formed in the 1990s and are known for their provocative and sexually explicit lyrics.

2 Guns Review Roundup: Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg's Shoot-'em-Up Is a Hit-or-Miss With Critics

by Alexis L. Loinaz Today 6:49 AM PDT

2 Guns Universal Studios

Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg are out the gate with Guns blazing.

The stars' new movie, 2 Guns, has finally hit theaters—an action-packed shoot-'em-up about two undercover agents who, at first, don't know about the other's true identity but must eventually combine wits to infiltrate a drug cartel.

It's the first time the two actors have teamed up on screen. And judging by the early consensus, Hollywood appears to have found its next great buddy duo: Film critics are raving about the actors' chemistry and whiz-bang repartee.

The rest of the movie, directed by Icelandic filmmaker Baltasar Kormákur, appears to be a mixed bag, though, with reviewers lamenting that, slick at it may seem, 2 Guns is simply shooting blanks. Here's the critical 411:

WATCH: American Hustle trailer—see Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence and Christian Bale and their crazy hair in action

2 Guns Universal Pictures

• "Big bangs and fast talk are the name of the genre game in 2 Guns, a slick, slippery thriller that taps into the anarchic playfulness that made the best American action flicks of the 1980s and '90s pop," raves The New York Times, calling Washington and Wahlberg's team-up "one of the better odd couples to bond and bicker since Mel met Danny."

• "2 Guns, caught me completely off guard in all the right ways," reveals Entertainment Weekly's Owen Gleiberman, who notes that the two stars "cut loose and seem to be having a blast swapping below-the-belt insults as a pair of undercover agents posing as drug dealers."

• "The picture survives its excesses thanks to winning chemistry between stars Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg, who animate banter-heavy dialogue and click so well, one wonders why they haven't shared the screen before," offers The Hollywood Reporter.

WATCH: George Clooney and Sandra Bullock got into orbit in Gravity trailer

• "The leads' banter, even the way they move around one another, creates a little ecosystem all its own," writes New York Magazine. "You never want to see them apart, and whenever they're separated, the movie loses energy...This is what some summer movies should be like—clever in a stupid way, and stupid in a clever way."

• The New York Post was less forgiving: "At first merely tangled, the plot gradually turns baroque in its silliness: This is the kind of movie that invites rude audience talkback, and gets it," the paper sniffs, labeling the film a "cheerfully ridiculous movie."

• "You believe the tired old B-movie plot might actually spring to life and relevance. No such luck," rants Rolling Stone. Nevertheless, the mag adds, "Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg are great company. You'd want to have a beer with them, trade war stories and laugh your ass off."

WATCH: Tom Hanks dives into Oscar race with Captain Phillips trailer

• "Thousands of rounds of ammo are spent in 2 Guns, a brutal, complicated and sporadically funny movie that still seems slight," offers USA Today.  "The ultra-complicated plot doesn't mask the fact that this is a cynical and derivative movie." Still, "the saving grace of the film is the chemistry between Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg," the paper opines.

• "The only thing simple and direct about 2 Guns is its title. This self-consciously nihilistic action movie is one slick piece of business as well as something of a double-edged sword," notes the Los Angeles Times. "Though individual set pieces are well done, the film inevitably leaves an empty taste behind it once it's done...Slickness can take you only so far."

• "2 Guns, with its hypercomplicated plot and semi-gritty, just-rolled-out-of-bed visuals, comes off as similar to 1,001 things we've already seen," rails The Village Voice. "The movie's pleasures, whatever they may be, stem from a kind of summer-diversion déjà vu."

• "Big guns, cool cars, tough talk and hats rule the day in 2 Guns, a cliche-ridden action comedy starring Mark Wahlberg and Denzel Washington in which the chemistry between the two stars packs far more heat than the explosions," scoffs The Washington Post.

Angelina Jolie Departs Australia Via Private Jet—See the Pic

Angelina Jolie Splash News

Angelina Jolie has, once again, taken to the friendly skies.

Just two days after she and Brad Pitt were seen departing Tokyo with three of their kids—Pax, Vivienne and Knox—the Oscar winner was spotted boarding a private jet out of Sydney, Australia, on Thursday.

Decked out in all-black attire, the actress was reportedly traveling with 9-year-old Pax.

Pitt and the rest of the family apparently did not join mother and son Down Under.

NEWS: Angelina Jolie tops Forbes' list of the highest-paid actresses

Jolie was reportedly heading back to Hawaii.

Earlier this month, she and Pax, along with 11-year-old son Maddox, spent several days in Oahu, where Jolie was scouting for possible filming locations for her upcoming film Unbroken.

The 38-year-old star is set to direct the drama that follows the true story of former Olympian and real life World War II hero Louis Zamperini who, as an Air Force pilot, crashed into the Pacific Ocean in 1943 and was subsequently taken captive by Japanese soldiers, who held him in a prison camp for the rest of the war.

It was recently announced that Jack O'Connell, best known for his role on the British hit show Skins, will star as Zamperini.

Billy Bob Thornton to Star in FX's Fargo, Justified and Louie's Return Dates and More

Billy Bob Thornton Jemal Countess/Getty Images

Billy Bob Thornton is coming to TV.

The Oscar winner is set to headline FX's Fargo, a limited series based on Joel and Ethan Coen's 1996 film, which was nominated for Best Picture, the network announced at the 2013 Summer Press Tour on Friday.

The 10-episode series goes into production this fall in Canada and debut in spring 2014. FX boss John Landgraf is confident the project "will do justice to the classic Coen Brother film of the same title." But Fargo fans shouldn't expect a remake as the series will feature an all-new "true crime" story.

VIDEO: Watch a preview from the Parks and Recreation's writing team on The Writers' Room!

Thornton isn't playing a character fans of the film will be familiar with, nor will anyone else. "There is no William H. Macy character, so there are no characters that are derived from the film Fargo," Landgraf explains. "But the show is. Still, it's hard to describe how remarkably true to the film it is. " Thornton is set to play Lorne Malvo, a manipulative man, per The Hollywood Reporter.

And while there is no female sheriff similar to Frances McDormand's character in the film, Landgraf reveals there will be a female cop on Fargo. "She's a young deputy. She's in her early 20s," he says. "She's not really the character from Fargo."

Landgraf says there is a potential for Fargo to become an anthology series à la American Horror Story as "the story of Fargo ends at the tenth episode of Fargo. Just like American Horror Story, the characters don't continue…it would have to be a whole new story."

VIDEO: Watch a preview of AMC's new series Low Winter Sun!

FX also revealed some premiere dates for their returning series...or at least some premiere months.

American Horror Story: Coven is set to debut in October, while Justified, starring Timothy Olyphant, will return January 2014, as well cult animated series Archer.

Louis C.K.'s critically acclaimed comedy Louie's fourth season will return in May.  (So. Far. Away.)

Jamie Lee Curtis Doing "Fine" After Car Accident as Pal Jodie Foster Reportedly Rushes to the Scene

by Alexis L. Loinaz Today 8:23 AM PDT

Jamie Lee Curtis Mark Sullivan/WireImage

That was a close call.

Jamie Lee Curtis had quite the scare Thursday after she got into a car accident in Venice, Calif., briefly landing her in the hospital before doctors eventually gave her the all-clear.

The LAPD confirms to E! News that at 10:10 a.m., the 54-year-old actress was riding in a limo when it was struck by another vehicle at the intersection of Pacific Avenue and Rose Avenue.

The True Lies star reportedly complained of pain and was transported to a local hospital. No crime was committed, authorities said.

"Jamie was indeed a passenger in a car involved in a collision this a.m.," the actress's rep tells E! News. "She went to the hospital to be checked out, but she is fine and is home resting."

And it looks like Curtis may have gotten some help on the scene from a celeb guardian angel.

Per published reports, Curtis supposedly called pal Jodie Foster to come and help her out, and photos from the scene show a woman resembling Foster standing next to Curtis. Police, however, could not confirm to E! News the Oscar winner's appearance, and Foster's rep was unavailable for comment.

(Here's an interesting movie connection between the two pals: Foster starred in the original 1976 version of Freaky Friday while Curtis headlined the 2003 remake costarring Lindsay Lohan.)

Curtis, however, has recently taken a step back from starring in feature films, opting instead to sign up for a string of TV guest stints. Last year, she popped up on both NCIS and New Girl.

The actress, however, will soon be making a big-screen return: She's set to star in the movie adaptation of the cult TV series Veronica Mars.

Kim Kardashian Makes First Post-Baby Appearance on Kris Jenner's Talk Show

Kim Kardashian, Kris Jenner Show

Lovely to see you, Kim Kardashian!

On Friday, the new mom made her first post-baby public appearance on mom Kris Jenner's talk show.

Kris, joined by cohost Sean "Diddy" Combs for the day, had no idea North West's mom was planning to surprise her on air.

VIDEO: Kim catches trespassing paparazzo in yard, mama Kris chases them down!

"Hi, Mom! I just wanted to say hi," Kim said, joining the duo via satellite. "I'm sorry I couldn't be there…I'm loving life a little bit too much right now!"

And while she understandably has her hands pretty full these days, Kim would never miss mom's show. "I watch you every single day," she said. "You are so amazing. You really are born to do this. I just wanted to say I love you, and have an amazing show."

Although Kris was too moved at the moment to chat, she did talk earlier in the show about how Kim's shedding those pregnancy pounds.

VIDEO: Kris introduces North West's baby double

Telling Diddy he was "reading way too many tabloids" if he thought Kim had completely "snapped back" to her prebaby size, Kris said the 32-year-old first-time mom was definitely losing weight.  "The good news is she's eating really well, and she's working out a little bit and she's nursing," said Kris. "She's doing all the right things to get back to a healthy place."

Healthy, happy and loving life! Sounds like a plan.

Lady Gaga and Madonna Accused of Violating Russian Immigration Laws

Madonna, Lady Gaga Ian Gavan/Getty Images, Todd Williamson/WireImage

It looks like Lady Gaga and Madonna may end up having more in common than just being international pop stars.

The singers could potentially be facing prosecution after Russian officials issued a statement saying the Material Girl and Mother Monster did not obtain appropriate visas to enter and perform in the country.

According to The Guardian, Madonna, who played there in August 2012, and Gaga, who performed last December, arrived using cultural-exchange visas, which "do not grant their bearers the right to engage in any commercial activity."

NEWS: Lady Gaga tops Forbes' highest-earning celebs under 30 list

As a result, prosecutors are looking into possibly asking Russia's foreign ministry or federal migration service to press charges.

The investigation has come about after Vitaly Milonov, the Russian politician who authored St. Petersburg's law banning gay "propaganda," brought the visa issue to the attention of authorities.

Following their 2012 shows, Milonov tried—unsuccessfully—to take legal action against Madonna and Gaga for speaking out in support of LGBT issues during their concerts and for "promoting sodomy, lesbianism, bisexuality and transgenderism among minors."

Oscars 2014: Ellen DeGeneres to Host Academy Awards for Second Time

Ellen DeGeneres Michael Rozman/Warner Bros.

Get ready to dance, because Ellen DeGeneres is hosting the Oscars in 2014!

Producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron announced the big news Friday, and Ellen (who hosted the 2007 Academy Awards, too) is clearly looking forward to coming back.

"I am so excited to be hosting the Oscars for the second time. You know what they say—the third time's the charm," she said in a statement.

PHOTOS: Take a look back at what the stars wore to the 2013 Oscars

"We are thrilled to have Ellen DeGeneres host the Oscars," said Zadan and Meron in a statement. "As a longtime friend, we had always hoped to find a project for us to do together, and nothing could be more exciting than teaming up to do the Oscars. There are few stars today who have Ellen's gift for comedy, with her great warmth and humanity. She is beloved everywhere, and we expect that the audience at the Dolby Theater, and in homes around the globe, will be as excited by this news as we are."

Oh, we're all excited! And Ellen's already cracking jokes—at her own expense! "I's official: I'm hosting the #Oscars!" she tweeted. "I'd like to thank @TheAcademy, my wife Portia [de Rossi] and, oh dear, there goes the orchestra."

They'd never play you off, E!

That said, this year's Oscars will most likely be quite different from the 2013 Academy Awards. Host Seth MacFarlane's Family Guy-esque humor drew mixed reviews, and he's already confirmed he has no plans to emcee the show again.

Fair enough. We're just psyched to see Ellen hosting the Oscars 2014, which air Sunday, March 2, 2014, on ABC.

Doctor Who: Runners and riders

2 August 2013 Last updated at 13:39 GMT By Tim Masters Entertainment and arts correspondent, BBC News Peter Capaldi, Billie Piper and Chiwetel Ejiofor Will Peter Capaldi, Billie Piper or Chiwetel Ejiofor be the next owner of the Tardis key? Speculation is mounting over who will replace Matt Smith in Doctor Who, with the announcement due on Sunday.

Smith, who has played the Time Lord since 2010, announced in June that he would be leaving in this year's Christmas special.

The past few weeks has seen a flurry of newspaper stories guessing at who might take over in the Tardis.

Early favourites included Harry Potter star Rupert Grint and Being Human actors Russell Tovey and Damien Molony.

As in previous years, some have suggested the role may go to a black actor, with Luther star Idris Elba, Homeland's David Harewood and former rapper Ashley Walters among those mentioned.

There have also been calls for a female Doctor, with Billie Piper, Olivia Colman and Dame Helen Mirren on some wish lists.

Here are some of the names appearing in the bookmakers' lists of favourites.

Peter Capaldi

Peter Capaldi has become the late favourite to take over the role of the Time Lord from Matt Smith.

The Scots actor, best known as foul-mouthed Malcolm Tucker in The Thick of It, is 6/4 favourite, according to bookmaker William Hill on Friday. Paddy Power has him at 7/4 favourite and Labrokes 11/8.

Capaldi played Roman merchant Caecilius in 2008 Doctor Who adventure The Fires of Pompeii.

At 55, as Metro points out, Capaldi is the same age as William Hartnell when he was cast in the role as the first Doctor in 1963.

Ben Daniels

Midlands-born Ben Daniels has enjoyed a long career in TV and film and on stage.

The 49-year-old actor will be familiar to many through his role as Finn Bevan in BBC series Cutting It (2002-2005). Other TV appearances include political thriller The State Within (2006) and ITV drama Law & Order: UK.

Daniels won an Laurence Olivier Award in 2001 for his performance in the Arthur Miller play All My Sons.

Ladbrokes and Paddy Power give him odds of 4/1, and William Hill 5/1.

Chiwetel Ejiofor

Chiwetel Ejiofor's career has successfully embraced television, film and theatre.

Speaking on the The Andrew Marr Show in 2011 he said he would be interested in the role of the Time Lord if it was offered.

Coming to public attention with his role in Stephen Frears' Dirty Pretty Things in 2002, film roles have included Kinky Boots, Children of Men and American Gangster.

Notable TV roles include The Shadow Line and Dancing on the Edge.

Ejiofor is currently appearing on stage in A Season In The Congo at London's Young Vic. He won a Laurence Olivier Award for best actor as Othello in 2008.

Paddy Power has the 36-year-old actor at 12/1.

Idris Elba

Idris Elba, star of TV detective series Luther, has said he's "proud" that people have linked him with roles such as Doctor Who and James Bond.

He told Newsbeat in July the roles were "national treasures".

But the 40-year-old Londoner, who shot to fame as drug lord Stringer Bell in HBO's The Wire, has also said of the idea of playing the Doctor: "I'd look silly in a bow tie."

Elba portrays Nelson Mandela in the forthcoming film Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom. Other recent movie roles include Prometheus and Pacific Rim.

Ladbrokes lists Elba at 12/1 while Paddy Power puts him at 25/1.

David Harewood

Homeland star David Harewood appeared in Doctor Who as Joshua Naismith in David Tennant's final two-part story The End of Time (2009-10).

Speaking about being linked with the Doctor role, the 47-year-old actor told Entertainment Weekly: "It's only rumours but it's amazing to be attached to such an iconic role.

"It would be extraordinary if the BBC were to make me the first black Doctor Who, it would be extraordinary. But I'm almost scared to make any comment whatsoever."

Harewood was appointed an MBE for services to drama in 2011.

Ladbrokes has the actor at 10/1, while William Hill has 14/1 and Paddy Power 16/1.

Rory Kinnear

Rory Kinnear was tipped as an early favourite to replace Matt Smith in the Tardis, but has since ruled himself out of the race.

"I haven't been and I am totally certain that I will not be asked to be the next Doctor Who," he told The Independent in July. On Friday, Paddy Power had Kinnear as its third favourite at 6/1.

His best-known big screen role is as MI6 officer Bill Tanner in the recent Bond films. On TV he is in BBC comedy Count Arthur Strong and imminent Channel 4 drama Southcliffe.

Kinnear won rave reviews for his Iago (opposite Adrian Lester's Othello) at the National Theatre earlier this year. He has also written his first play, The Herd, which opens at London's Bush Theatre in September.

Billie Piper

Billie Piper is returning for this November's 50th anniversary Doctor Who special.

She played Rose alongside both Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant's Doctors.

Piper gained fame as a teenager when her 1998 single Because We Want To went to number one. Her acting career began with a part in BBC period drama The Canterbury Tales in 2003.

She went on to star in ITV2's Secret Diary of a Call Girl and the BBC adaptation of Philip Pullman's The Ruby in the Smoke.

Piper's most recent stage role was in Lucy Prebble's clinical drugs trial drama The Effect at the National Theatre, for which she earned an Olivier nomination.

Piper is something of an outsider with the bookies. Paddy Power puts her at 33/1.

Daniel Rigby

Daniel Rigby, according to Ladbrokes, is the biggest mover and shaker in the betting, having been 20/1 a few days ago and now standing at 5/2.

Rigby won a Bafta TV award in 2011 for his pitch-perfect portrayal of comedy legend Eric Morecambe in BBC Four biopic Eric and Ernie - beating off competition from Matt Smith (for Doctor Who) and Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock).

The 30-year-old actor's stage work includes the hit play One Man, Two Guvnors, alongside James Corden, in the West End and on Broadway.

Andrew Scott

Andrew Scott won a Bafta in 2012 for his role as Jim Moriarty in BBC series Sherlock.

The Dublin-born actor told website Flicks and the City in June that it was "flattering" to be mentioned as a potential Doctor.

"One has to wait to be asked," he said. "I know Mr Moffat very well, so he'll keep his cards close to his chest."

Scott, whose stage work includes Emperor and Galilean at the National Theatre, is given 8/1 odds by Paddy Power and 10/1 from William Hill.

Ben Whishaw

Rory Kinnear's fellow Bond actor Ben Whishaw, who played Q in Skyfall, is 6/1 according to Ladbrokes, while William Hill has him at 12/1.

Whishaw has also ruled himself out of becoming the next Doctor, telling the Daily Mail: "It's not going to be me. But I don't mind - I don't think you can be Q and Doctor Who. It would be a bit wrong."

Whishaw, who appeared in BBC drama The Hour, was last seen onstage opposite Judi Dench in Peter and Alice at the Noel Coward theatre.

He has just been announced in the cast of a West End revival of Jez Butterworth's Mojo, which will begin at the Harold Pinter Theatre in October.

Doctor Who Live: The Next Doctor, is on BBC One at 7pm on 4 August.

Radcliffe revisits The Simpsons

2 August 2013 Last updated at 11:48 GMT The Simpsons and Family Guy Daniel Radcliffe, Ashton Kutcher and Mariah Carey are among the stars lending their voices to roles on the new seasons of The Simpsons, Family Guys and American Dad.

It will be the second time Radcliffe has featured in The Simpsons, after a Halloween episode in 2010.

Mariah Carey will play a "redneck animal handler" in American Dad, while Ashton Kutcher will make a guest voice on Family Guy.

Fox makes all three animated shows.

In 2010, Harry Potter star Radcliffe lent his voice to a young vampire, this time round he will play a strange older boy that Bart encounters.

Mad Men's Elizabeth Moss, Bridesmaid's star Kristen Wiig and Eva Longoria will also voice characters for The Simpsons' 25th season.

Moss will play a mum who names her baby after Homer when he helps deliver the child.

Bridesmaid star Wiig will play an FBI agent in the show's first episode going out on 29 September in the US.

Also included in the series is an episode by Anchorman creator Judd Apatow. Last year he revealed that a script he wrote for The Simpsons 22 years ago is to finally make it to air.

The script sees Homer Simpson hypnotised into thinking he is 10.

Other guest voices on Family Guy will be Conan O'Brien, Two and a Half Men's Jon Cryer, Bryan Cranston of Breaking Bad and Maroon 5 singer Adam Levine playing himself.

Zooey Deschanel, the star of New Girl, will also voice a role on American Dad.
